KEYNOTE SPEAKER – Étienne Boulay

Passionate, excessive and intense, Étienne Boulay made football his sport of choice. Nothing, however, predisposed him to the career we know him to be; he is small in stature and does not particularly excel in the field in his early days. It is above all by his attitude, his passion and his hard work that he will stand out to the point of reaching very high peaks and winning important sports scholarships that will take him from Connecticut to the University of New Hampshire.

In 2006, Étienne Boulay was drafted by the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. In 2008, he signed a professional contract with the New York Jets, but his New York adventure only lasted a few months.

That same season, he returned to the Alouettes and participated in his team’s Gray Cup victories in 2009 and 2010. He won a third in 2012, with the Toronto Argonauts before retiring.

However, it was not on the pitch that Etienne would fight his greatest battle. Struggling with the side effects of his concussions, a difficult divorce and serious consumption problems that he hides from those around him and his family, he will live through an extremely dark period and will attempt suicide before submitting to his third therapy, which will finally allow him to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Accumulating today a little more than five years of sobriety, Étienne wishes to give meaning to this period of his life by sharing his story with humility, emotion and humour.

As part of his talk, he recounts how he went from the low-grade student, class jester, to the professional athlete and committed man he is today. Using examples drawn from his career full of pitfalls and sacrifices, Étienne describes the key elements of his journey that led him to the fulfillment of his dream, and also to a darker side of his personality. Rigor, determination, motivation and discipline are in the spotlight in this inspiring conference delivered with simplicity where everyone will find their account.
